FF3 music is superb IMO but the gameplay is more fluid in the first Real Bout. The first Real Bout is much better IMO, like an extension o Fatal Fury 3.

The gameplay is tweaked in a way I also don't like. It's average at best IMO and kinda off in some aspects. I don't like the art direction of Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers. If we hold gameplay over pretty graphics, MotW is no way better than those two. RB1 is my favorite due to having more distinctive features. So, how is it the best in the series? I don't understand. The only better thing about MotW is fluid animations.

Garou MotW feels and plays like a KoF game in disguise! Well, I like KoF, but did we really need another one? Not at the price of another great RB-like game. And then there's the worst offender - the gameplay feel itself. The character sprites are smaller - the size of KoF sprites. First of all it has no trademark FF line-switching at all. Some players hold it slightly less that RB Special but it's just as great IMO.Īnd now let's look at Garou Mark of the Wolves. RB2 is really a revised version of RB Special with little changes and two new characters. It was a fan favorite before the release of MotW. I am not really fond of these changes but RB Special makes up for it with the much improved artwork, especially for the fighters' sprites, and a new, catchier soundtrack. While it keeps the same gameplay basics from RB1, it omits one of the lines and the ringout system. Next, we've got RBFF Special, which is, unlike FF Special before it, a completely new game. So, RBFF1 was quite unlike other run off the mill 2D fighting games of the era. Then, there are VF-like ringouts, but they are much less annoying since there are barriers around the ring that are not easily broken. It feels more like Tekken or Virtua fighter sans the laggy animations that are synonymous with the 3D fighter games. Many attacks are easilly chainable and the actual gameplay feels very different from the likes of SF and KoF. It really added to the "depth" of a 2D game. What was an annoying gimmick in earlier FF games became a nice and distinctive feature. Ok, why was RB1 so special?įirst, SNK polished the lines switching system. Well, there was FF3 before it but I think of it as of "Real Bout beta version".

While FF1-2-Special did little to distance themselves from the numerous Street Fighter clones that flooded the arcades in early 90's, Real Bout got that distinctive feel that made Fatal Fury series special indeed. Why is that? Let's remember the Real Bout games. Popular opinion is that Mark of the Wolves is the best game in the Fatal Fury series.
